Diary Entry, 16 February 2025
Finally, an update. I had a very busy two weeks. The first week of the month was a little bit stressful, but the workload let up as I progressed in my project, so by the second week, I was back to my usual routine in the first half of the day, with the project covering the second half. This past week, I was organized and productive enough to be able to log out as quickly as two minutes after the end of my work hours. It felt good to be productive at work, but I also was looking forward to the weekend so very much.
Less Social Media for this Old Gal
One of the reasons I look forward to my work hours ending is this blog. I somehow became interested in writing again. I figured out that the reason I did not want to participate in social media was not because I didn't have anything interesting to say but because I don't really mind sharing online. The problem for me was that I did not appreciate social media. I didn't think that I could easily go back to blogging on my own corner of the web where no one could easily censor me, and not many would be able to find me. What I find somewhat comforting in writing here is that most of the usual demographics of various social media platforms are not interested in personal websites outside of their algorithm. Moreover, there won't be a lot of doomscrolling and brainrot for me over here, I can therefore focus primarily on writing and creating. I was not surprised that my social media screen time has dropped to approximately 30%. Working on this blog has given me direction on how to spend my evenings more productively.
Coding After a Long Retirement
On top of having a place where I can comfortably share my ideas, I started loving writing code again. I haven't played around with HTML, CSS, and CMSs like WordPress and Textpattern in a very long time, but it was, as cliche as it may sound, "just like riding a bike." It's like no time has passed.
Naturally, I began looking for other blogs and kindred spirits that I could visit on a regular basis - personal blogs, tech and development blogs. I want to read content and ideas from people who make useful, entertaining, and meaningful things. I'd like to read genuine thoughts untainted by brands and sponsors. I do miss the blogging community of the early aughts.
The Small Web
I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon Neocities. My goodness! Looking at the very creative personal websites there made me long for the late 90s WYSIWYG websites like I used to have at Geocities. It made my heart ache for the past, but it also made my heart very happy to know that there are young ones who appreciate what I and my fellow elder millennials and Gen X-ers enjoyed during the advent of Y2K.
I even came upon a movement called The Small Web. Apparently, a good number of people strive for more independent website creation and online publishing beyond the reach of those techbros who want to keep users imprisoned within the confines of their social media platforms. I am so pleased that some still value personal blogs and websites.
